My least favourite Austen novel I was doubly disappointed because I had enjoyed the DVD version I have, but I found Fanny to be not just over sensitive but hard to believe how could someone come from a family like hers without having learned to hold her own And where did she learn her hard to understand moral code I admit that Aunt Norris does not help matters, though Edmund is as bad, if not worse true, he is kind to Fanny, but he seems very judgemental where others are concerned both of them, as far as I can see, make judgements on very little factual basis Some details are supplied by the narrator at the end, but there is no reason to suspect Fanny or Edmund were aware of these details One small example Fanny is outraged when Miss Crawford describes the behaviour of Maria and Henry as folly , but the narrator merely says Maria was imprudent , and most of the blame is thrust on Henry, which seemed inexplicable to me until the he narrator tells us how Maria tried to send him away, but he had taken this as a challenge How did Fanny know this She must have read the book.I am also unhappy with the structure, which I find bitty The play is a strange interruption in the narrative flow Shakespeare handles it, but I didn t think Jane did, and I got the impression that acting was a sin in itself And there are the loose ends what happens to Tom Why is Susan completely dropped from the story once she gets to Mansfield OK, the narrator tacks a ...

I do love Jane Austen, but of all her books I liked this the least Fanny as a heroine was just too wimpy for my taste It s probably one of the books that I ve ever read where I can truly say I like the movie version better than the book.
